Abandoned Homes--- Photo Show by Hua Ke-jian
Hua Kejian, a Shanghainese interpreter, uses the iens to give us his own interpretation of the lanes of his city. In recording these crumbling alleys, he’s producing an archive, a visual record for Shanghai’s younger generation.
“Maybe my so-called red-brick-complex originated from my childhood memory of old home (now demolished and became part of a luxurious club in western Shanghai) where there was a red brick decorative band on the wall between the first floor and the second floor where I fixed a ring of steel wire as a basketball hoop and threw a little rubber ball into it for fun everyday (later my little naughty son naturally). Decades have past and I picked up a camera, wandering around the big city just like a tramp, under the strange looks from the inhabitants, focusing on all sorts of old appearing houses which would vanish soon everywhere, recording with desperate efforts as more as and as quickly as possible something worth leaving in our memories before they were destroyed…..the times is changing too fast, and we can do little against the trend actually, the old wearing off and passing away, the new coming in instead, perhaps some surviving by chances for reasons whatever……anyhow, in my fillings a touch of red color of aged wore bricks and tiles always remains and it warms me when I walking in the forest of cement and glass in the city…… ” said Hua.
Hua ke-jian, a translator in Shanghai, realized his dream of childhood after his retirement. He wandered around narrow back streets and small lanes throughout Shanghai capturing with his simple digital camera the scenes of daily life of ordinary people in the city and various kinds of old appearing houses where they are living in or going to be relocated…… He recorded shadows and relics of the old times in his own way with kind of seemingly noblemen quality. In his pictures, old “shikumen” or terraced houses, western-style houses and apartments, even huge mansions with east-west combination style exquisitely built in early the 20 century which would to be demolished soon appeared graceful and elegant instead of shabby and obscure as they used to be for long, which leave something historical, something cultural and something worth to remember for generations to come. And in this sense, we could say art is history too.
